About

"Today Was Not the Same" is a beautifully illustrated children’s book follows a precocious young girl as she tries to understand why the adults in her life are acting differently throughout the day. At the end of the night, she overhears her family discussing an encounter between an unarmed Black man and the police. This leads to a meaningful family discussion and hopes for a resolve.

As the author, Jatrean Sanders hopes that this book creates a foundation for readers to have conversations with the children in their lives about similar encounters between people of color and the police. Jatrean also hopes that the conversation, especially for younger readers, evolves beyond the incident detailed in the book. With the recent surge in news and social media coverage where other people in power, like teachers, store employees and even everyday citizens, have judged, harassed and treated people of color differently, Jatrean hopes that adults start talking with children about these everyday situations and the appropriate ways to respond. Jatrean believes that we, as a country, have tried to protect the children in our lives from the realities of the current racial climate to preserve their innocence. However, children at any age cannot become better, heal and grow if the adults in their lives do not at least recognize and discuss the disparities in the way people are treated.

"Today Was Not the Same" is self-published by Jatrean Sanders through her Black Female-owned company, Jatrean Sanders Enterprises, Inc. Copyright 2021.
